Abstract: To help designers expand concept space in the process of innovation design, a concept suggestion based patent query approach was proposed. Multi-facet concepts relevant to design objects and implementation means were extracted by using natural language processing technique. These concepts were suggested to designers to help them better understand their information requirement. The diverse concepts selected by designers were used to reformulate patent query and were expected to return diverse query results which were beneficial to extend their knowledge space and ignite designers'inspiration.
