Abstract: Comparisons between High Level Architecture (HLA) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) were performed to illustrate the necessity of their combination. Then several key enhancements and changes of HLA evolved Web service Application Programming Interface (API) were introduced in comparison with native APIs, such as federation development and execution process, communication mechanisms, data encoding, status maintenance. Some approaches were summarized including Web-Enabling HLA at the communication layer, HLA interface specification layer, federate membership interface layer and application layer. Finally, the existing research problems were discussed, and the future trend was also pointed out.
