Abstract: Overlapping the coupled activities is an important strategy to implement concurrent engineering in complex product development process. The nominal information evolution and valid information evolution were presented based on iterative design process caused by information interdependence among activities. And then a non-stationary Poisson process was constructed to describe information transfer between upstream activity and downstream activity. Based on this, the cause and implementation process of iterative solution were analyzed by rework probability design structure matrix. Next, an algorithm for product development time and cost under the strategy of overlapping the coupled activities was set up, and it was proved that overlapping the coupled activities could trade-off between product development time and cost. Finally, an example was given to verify the results.
